Now I understand it's exactly what the work requires."

Nikki Heaton is an artist working in sculptural textiles. After qualifying in Product Design, she specialised in Colour and Material Design — drawn instinctively to the elements that give objects their emotional resonance. For 25 years she developed that expertise with major luxury brands, including 15 years consulting in-house on exterior colour and material design for Nokia, Microsoft, Jaguar Land Rover and McLaren.

Uncompromising standards were never a choice for her — they were the only way she knew how to work. But something wasn't quite clicking: she watched intention dilute at scale, care thinning out by the time it reached the world.

When she became a mother in 2020, everything shifted. She returned to fine art when her son Monty was twelve months old, inheriting her own mother's sewing machine and working with textiles collected over the years — her mother a seamstress of over four decades, whose machine once lulled her to sleep as a child. Now Nikki works through the night while Monty sleeps, hoping he'll one day recall the same.

Her practice is rooted in colour and material as carriers of emotional resonance — work that gives form to what often goes unspoken.
