Petra's Style
Petra studied at Central St Martins, later developing an impressive roster of clients through her art, illustration and textile design. Recognised for a timeless, bold and elegant quality, her award winning artworks are defined by her own distinctly modern expression.
The Turban Ladies were initially inspired by her grandmother Astri, who always wore a turban at the seaside and in wild weather. Petra remembers: “In fact, I think she wore turbans all through the autumn and winter months to keep her hair in check. Apart from the elegance reminiscent of a bye-gone era, I was impressed by the ease with which she’d arrange her hair into elaborate hairdos in the morning. I loved watching her well-practiced movements with pins and combs when I visited my grandparents on the island.
I am very interested in the transition of when a learnt skill transforms into second-nature, a movement so natural, that it’s almost instinctive. I didn’t inherit her passion for tidy looks, but her ability to carry herself with grace throughout the day made an impact on me. My wild style compositions were never in line with her idea of how to dress but they’ll always remind me of rare, intimate moments from my childhood.”
"As long as I can remember, I've been drawn to the line and drawing and making has been a part of my life. I love the rhythm of marks on the page and it's exciting how a moment becomes ingrained on them. Creating work makes me feel at ease, at home - nothing compares. I love the feeling of losing myself in a parallel space and time - where only creativity can take me." - Petra Börner
Drop 5 - Winter 2020
"This is going to sound corny, but things have been so gloomy and tough for so long now so I wanted to focus on something vibrant and positive. The new collection of work is really a celebration of the people who help me overcome hardship, friends, neighbours and family.
I was thinking of the people I know and meet who are generous with themselves and make such a difference to us every day. Some people just do that with ease and it's a beautiful thing! So, here's to Chummy and Mon ami with their good vibes helping us keep our heads up!" - Petra Borner, Still Life
Drop 4 - Autumn 2020
"This series, Island Flower, is inspired by my brief stay on the Swedish west coast island where I spent my summers as a child. A tranquil, unusual place in nature, surrounded by the forest centered on barren rock tumbling into the salty, cold sea. It's such a contrast to the past months spent in our city flat and my daughter started taking cuttings of plants on our walks. She then pressed them, found out their names in Swedish and English and arranged them into a scrapbook." - Petra Borner, Island Flower Series
Drop 3 - High Summer 2020
This new series of work was painted with dynamic marks on paper. In an intuitive process, somewhere between painting and printing, the collection of original works capture Petra’s passion for drawing central to all her work.
Börner’s background designing textiles for fashion and interior design is present in the near- abstract compositions. Here her bold figures trace the silhouette of a new hope and a dawning determination for change in uncertain times.
Drop 2 - Spring / Summer 2020
"Floralistic is a collection of new work painted with ink and acrylics on paper. It’s a booming celebration of spring, its zesty, fragrant colours and the power of transition. These Floral Faces are immersed in foliage and have become one with the natural world. Energetic, bright blocks of colours are first applied to the paper, followed by the black ink lines. The motifs take shape unplanned and instinctively, a reaction to the palette on the page." - Petra Börner
