Vanitas and Still Life

Still life has been one of the most popular genres in Western art since the early 17th Century. Gaining popularity in the 19th Century, these representations traditionally depict everyday objects as well as botanical and food motifs in intricate arrangements that hold symbolic meaning. They can be interpreted as celebrations of material pleasures as well as reminders of human life and its brevity, especially the closely related styles - ‘Vanitas’ or ‘Memento Mori’.
