Mania; the Greek Goddess of Madness.

"Up until as recently as 1952, women were regularly treated for ‘Hysteria’. Common side effects being anxiety, sexual desire, irritability, fainting and insomnia.

Practically every woman I know ticks at least three of those boxes! But isn’t the idea of a womxn being told she is hysteric or mad, the defining feature of gas lighting? So maybe things haven’t moved on as far as we had hoped. I wanted the bright colours used in this painting to reflect and embrace this idea of mania." - Venetia Berry

About the artist

Venetia Berry is a London-based artist who trained at The Charles Cecil School in Florence, followed by The Leith School in Edinburgh and then The Royal Drawing School, London. An accomplished oil painter and portrait artist, she also creates work that is whimsical and dream-like. With a particular interest in the female nude, she paints the figure through an abstracted lens, simplifying the form using pure line, or reduced mark-making.
