Tyche; the Greek Goddess of Prosperity, Fortune & Chance.

"I have always loved the aspect of chance within my work. I will always invite chance in, by drawing directly onto the canvas, or making the canvasses before deciding what to paint on them (as opposed to carefully planning the composition). To me this allows things to happen naturally, without too much control.

When you think about it, our whole lives are based around chance. Who your parents are. Where you are born. The colour of your skin. Your sex. The devastating Refugee crisis is purely based on where you live. The world is an incredibly unfair place. It is really important to me, as a privileged white woman living in London, to address this in this show. I hope to be constantly checking myself and working towards an equal and fair society." - Venetia Berry

About the artist

Venetia Berry is a London-based artist who trained at The Charles Cecil School in Florence, followed by The Leith School in Edinburgh and then The Royal Drawing School, London. An accomplished oil painter and portrait artist, she also creates work that is whimsical and dream-like. With a particular interest in the female nude, she paints the figure through an abstracted lens, simplifying the form using pure line, or reduced mark-making.
