Thomas Merrett is a British sculptor and printmaker based in East London. Drawing on both classical influences and his own distinctive vision, his work explores the relationship between figure and environment—whether through solitary figures or groups engaged in moments of stillness or reflection. Through these compositions, Merrett examines patterns of behaviour, human interaction, and a shared sense of connection.
Working with simplified forms, Merrett creates sculptures and prints that suggest quiet, introspective moments. Developed from memory through drawings and studies in clay or plaster, his works are later realised in wood, stone, or bronze. His compositions balance individual presence with collective experience.
Merrett trained at the City and Guilds of London Art School and the Florence Academy of Art. His work is held in numerous collections, including Marchmont House, Scotland; Founders Hall, London; and the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern, Barcelona.
“My work begins with direct observation—a moment that captures my attention and imagination. The human form is central to my practice; I am drawn to subtle behaviours and quiet interactions, which I seek to express through sculpture and print.”
