Artist

Brendan Lancaster

Brendan works in a quiet, peaceful studio. In the summer with the windows open he can hear the ducks in the city farm over the road, and the conversations of people passing in the street. He has been painting for over 20 years, and has explored many styles and subjects over that time, showing work widely in galleries across the UK.
He says about his process: "For my subjects, when I see someone doing something interesting, or boring, that I think will make a picture, I take a photo, and store these up for potential paintings. I work out the composition in my sketchbook to simplify it down to the essentials before starting on the canvas." Brendan also takes inspiration from reading, most recently from Japanese fiction, in particular Banana Yoshimoto and Mieko Kawakami, for the way they show that the details of our lives really matter.

"I paint moments from everyday life, family, and friends doing the ordinary things we hardly notice in passing. Translating from photos and sketches, I love to explore my fascination with colour, light, shade, and close-up compositions that seem to tell a story." — Brendan Lancaster
