112/ How To Incorporate Cloth Into Your Home This Christmas With Gemma Moulton

At the beginning of December, we had the pleasure of partnering with East London Cloth. Their founder, Gemma Moulton, opened the doors of their shop on Vyner Street allowing us and our artists to take over their beautiful space.

As soon as you step foot in the shop you are immediately greeted by a warm feeling as if you were stepping into your own home. Unique textile pieces are hung on each wall and antique pieces of furniture add to that comforting feeling. It was a joy to see lamps and ceramic pieces by Sophie Victoria Edwards and Freyja Lee in the space paired with their gorgeous range of hand-made lampshades.

With like-minded values championing design and good craftsmanship and an incredible eye for home styling it was a no-brainer to ask Gemma to share her tips on how to incorporate cloth in your Christmas decor.

1. USE SOFT LIGHTING

Christmas time calls for an abundance of candles with the importance of setting a relaxed mood coming centre stage. There is nothing like the gentle glow of a candle flame. I love to recreate this effect by using subtle lighting elements. We’ve recently installed (our) East London Cloth’s gathered Piccolo lamp shades into our home. The piccolo is gathered using Hawksley’s beautiful texture which translates into the perfect gathered shade to produce a warm light that is so cosy.
I can’t overstate the importance of choosing warm lights rather than colder tones.

2. REPURPOSE TEXTILES

As an eternal collector of textiles and samples, I enjoy using smaller pieces of fabric as gift wrap.
Textiles with a narrative that tell a story work really well for this. This repurposing adds another level of dimension to the gift and it’s not single use. Friends and family always appreciate the lack of waste that is encompassed in this form of gift-giving.

3. TREE DECORATIONS

Scraps of fabric are excellent tools to decorate your tree. If you want to really go for it, select the pieces that work well with your furniture and make shapes and forms out of them. I particularly love using remnants of striped silks and rich velvets to add to the glitziness of Christmas. I take great joy in using metallics for decoration, and there is no better place for them than the tree.

4. ALWAYS ADD CUSHIONS

Textiles are a great way to add depth and a sense of homeliness to a room. After the hurry of Christmas day there is always the need to sink into a plush sofa or chair. I firmly believe that Christmas is a time for ‘the more the merrier’. It is a time of excess, and that extends to cushions.

I love layering sofas with cushions of many shapes and sizes. We’ve recently launched a collection of plain cushions that will work in many settings. Our Myrtle cushion has a lustrous deep green colour which will compliment the beloved Christmas foliage.
