Isabel Garfield
Isabel is a multi-media artist who recently completed The Drawing Year at The Royal Drawing School, working across painting, printmaking, drawing, and installations. Her work investigates the ways in which memories and dreams function and connect to our everyday lived experiences. She is interested in what constitutes a real, waking space and how this can weave reality and fiction together. The imagery in her work merges colour, pattern, objects, and the remembered frames and shadows of interiors.
In her recent studies, she became interested in combining observational elements with more imaginative work. She enjoys subverting mediums, such as printmaking in a painterly way which has added a new dialogue to her work as she has displayed these alongside paintings and installations. Through looking at German expressionist cinema she has developed an interest in the ways sets and spaces are constructed to form theatrical realities.
'I have been looking at interior and exterior spaces and the middle ground between these. Through using a combination of paint and pastels in transparent layers I have been playing with the shadows found in spaces and with the idea of trying to remember something entirely.' — Isabel Garfield
