Elizabeth Loveday is an artist, mother and story teller from Cornwall. Beginning with linear drawings as a guide, she layers, dyes and hand-stitches fabric of different weights, textures and ages to create narrative and decorative works. Her work can be viewed as a visual outlet for dialogues that exist within herself and wider society. Handling humanistic themes, such as parenthood, mental health, connection and ritual, she uses characters loosely gleaned from Cornish folk tales and her own life to tell stories that exist within the community she lives in. It is at once a comment on self and place and the intermingling of both.
Elizabeth studied Illustration at UWE, Bristol. She has been selling work privately and through galleries in Cornwall, Devon, Bristol and London for the past ten years and has featured in a number of magazines. She has recently beened commissioned to produce artwork for Hayle Heritage Museum, selected for a residency at Porthmeor Studios, St Ives, and has run workshops for The Newlyn School of Art. She works from a studio close to her hometown, Penzance, in Cornwall.
“My decorative works can feel inviting, safe and wholesome until inspected more closely. By using nudity, dance and theatrical composition, I like to play with the viewer's expectation of craft and offset the labour intensive and embellished finish with absurdity, humour and vulnerability." - Elizabeth Loveday
