Bethany Holmes
Bethany Holmes is an artist living and working in Essex. She's inspired by the shifting light, changes in temperature, and the ways colours interact. Colour is a path to be followed, and Holmes has a hyperawareness of the nuances, vibrations, and implications of a given palette. Bethany’s paintings are emotive battles that are about living, experience layered, and of simply being in the moment.
Holmes graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a BA in Textile Design and has been practicing as an artist since then.
"Each painting only becomes final once a ‘perfect imbalance’ is reached. Sometimes this happens in a matter of hours, in other cases several years, but every work is an equally loaded palimpsest of time." - Bethany Holmes

"This new body of work reflects a deeper connection to femininity in both nature and process. Working with smaller brushes and more deliberate, intuitive gestures, each piece carries a sense of softness balanced by quiet strength. There’s a grounded, elemental quality throughout—an exploration of power through delicacy, and presence through restraint. The work speaks to the quiet resilience and rhythm found in the natural world." - Of Earth & Ease, Bethany Holmes
The Open Call Winners Collection 2024
“These paintings explore the subtle interplay between natural shadows and human intervention, all without depicting the landscape explicitly. They reflect the seasonal transitions—from the brief, frosty days of winter to the extended warmth of summer. Through a delicate balance of natural curves and human traces, these works delve into the nuances of colour and form, capturing an elusive harmony that emerges from the fusion of nature and human influence, marked by a perfect imbalance of colour.” - Bethany Holmes
