Artist
Lara Voce
English artist, Lara Voce, paints still life works which have an abstract quality. She explores everyday objects, simplifying their forms and exploring texture through her application and layering of paint.
Her work is characterised by an unusual luminosity. The painted surface is in no sense superficial. It is achieved by a meticulous series of processes: painting, layering, sanding, repainting. Sometimes, the final work contains hints of earlier imagery and previous compositions. She works from memory, exploring a putative composition through repetitive line drawings; some of which are developed into an artwork, a painting, always in acrylic for its immediacy. During the process, the layers of paint, the sanding, but most of all the eye, contribute to the creation of the finished work of art.
Lara's Style
Lara is heavily influenced by the work of by William Scott, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Morris. One of her favourite contemporary artists is Kristin Vestgard for the way she makes the paint light up on the canvas. She is also inspired by her own extensive collection of ceramics, which often appear in her work. At the beginning of a new collection she produces a moodboard with objects, colours and forms and refers back to this as she paints. Through her muted palette, she hopes that the viewer feels a sense of calm, she says: “I hope to capture a moment, a pause in time. The flattened simplified objects, invite the viewer to pause and take a moment to decipher them. ”
Until recently Lara worked as a Senior Interior Designer for Aston Martin where she honed her eye. She divides her time between her old brick built Art Studio in the Warwickshire countryside and the Dorset coast.
“My paintings capture a moment in time. The objects are familiar, everyday items, but they are also treasures. I put great value on the small details and touch points in my day, from the cup I have my coffee in, to the plate I eat off. I hope to capture these fleeting moments in my paintings, giving the viewer a moment to pause and to slow down.” — Lara Voce

“This new collection of still life paintings examines simple objects using almost primitive line and form. The composition and use of colours is deliberately minimal to create a sense of stillness and pause.” - Lara Voce, At The Table
