Artist
Nikki Gardham
Nikki is a British artist whose work is rooted in observation, memory and folklore in the landscape. Her childhood passion for history and geology became focused on the palpable mystery that can somehow be held by the objects and stories that remain with us.
Nikki was awarded a postgraduate scholarship at the Royal Drawing School in 2012, where she spent a year drawing in the capital, in the museums and on the city streets, absorbing the layers of history which were being added to every day.
For Nikki, drawing materials can be used like divination rods, exploring the landscape for the ley lines, tracks and places that the eye keeps coming back to. In her recent work, the unseen and the felt are as present as the trees and hills that shield them from the naked eye.
“Making images has an important practical purpose for me. I don’t hold onto memories in any detail – my mind is often too fizzy – but when I draw it physically connects me to the memory or thought. It etches deeper into my mind. Living with images is just as important for me too – each time I see them the story of them is retold.”- Nikki Gardham

Mountain Series
"These works emerged from a visit to the foothills of the Mont Blanc Massif, where the history of the town suggested stories of settlement and survival and the mists that hung low occasionally parted to reveal glimpses of granite and snow." - Nikki Gardham, Mountain Series
