About the artist

Phoebe Howard uses collage as a stage for her inner world where personal myths unfold without resolution or familiar order. Her work exists in a space suspended between reality and imagination, drawing inspiration from gothic writing.

Phoebe graduated from Chelsea College of Art with a specialism in embroidery. Rooted in her background in textiles, her collage process mirrors embroidery through its use of patchwork and piecing together fragments into something whole.

"My practice sits between drawing and collage, where I collect figures, furniture, observations, then piece them together into narratives. This collection grew out of a residency in a hotel, where the characters echo the staff and guests I observed. Drawing on my love of gothic writing, the works hint at a descent beneath the polished surface, as the luxurious facade begins to slip." - Phoebe Howard
