Artist
Sophie Victoria Edwards
Sophie works in painting, drawing and ceramics. Her work abstracts and weaves together fragments from observed and imagined places, often dense with obsessive marks and rich in tone. Based in Suffolk, she combines her drawing and ceramic practice further and continues to explore memory, pattern and colour.
She studied at Central St Martins, followed by Edinburgh College of Art and recently completed the Royal Drawing School’s scholarship course. She has exhibited at Christie's, London and the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh.
Sophie's Style
Often a body of work will begin with a collection of drawings. Sophie likes to make quick sketches when traveling, jotting thoughts and feelings from occurrences or observations. When back in the studio she'll then draw from them again, rearranging them and extracting shapes and patterns to use on either her drawing or ceramic work. She can work on her drawings and paintings for months at a time, constantly turning them, reworking them, masking and revealing layers of colour and marks. She loves the immediacy of working with pastels and oils, each piece can change so quickly.
In contrast, she will slowly be slab building her stoneware pieces. She loves the simple physicality of working with clay and feels constantly challenged creating these forms. She says “at the glazing stage I have to find a balance between spontaneous painterly drawing work and a controlled way of planning and glazing.”
"I love to combine and contrast painterly two-dimensional work with three-dimensional stoneware ceramic forms. Each piece evolves through abstract responses to materials, patterns and places" — Sophie Victoria Edwards

Hopscotch
"HOPSCOTCH showcases a selection of one-off stoneware lamps alongside jagged edge paintings and a series of drawings responding to a kilim rug. The collection draws from faded memories of past travels and feelings of warmth and delight in simplicity." - Sophie Victoria Edwards
