About The Artist
Ian Gichohi, is a photographer and maker living and working in Nairobi, Kenya.
His practice is an exploration of our relationships to images, our environment and the function of everyday objects as vessels for subjective meaning. Moving between photography and assembly, his compositions highlight the ways in which objects around us can offer insight into the ways we live. With a background in architecture, the assemblages oscillate between the intuitive and the formalist, through the placement and merging of various photographs on an assortment of different paper. Thinking with images and their ability for continued meaning, this exploration began as a series of photographic experiments that gave equal consideration to the image and the material quality of the surface that holds it.
"Using experimental inkjet printing alongside a curiosity for the direct properties of various kinds of paper - their translucencies, textures, absorbency, to create layered formats and various opacities. Fastened with eyelets, this interplay of light, hand, surface and time between each stage allows for plural associations to emerge."
