Marking Time (Framed)
About The Artist
Tailoring, as a practice, forms the background of Sophie's work. Zooming in on tender moments from the life room and her memories of specific moments; tugging cloth, cocooning bedsheets, un-wearing garments or our sensitive touches between one another holding them in space.
In blurring the boundaries between the artworks, objects and the wornness they represent, she explores the ways in which our experiences of the historical archive resonate with the material memories we collect for ourselves. Making, wearing, mending and caring are celebrated as processes of not just the past but present.
In the studio she washes and dyes remnants of cloth to give them a new story, using them to understand loss as well as memory. She aims to communicate the importance of slow, repetitive life movements within the domestic space through expanded fashion practices. Printmaking and drawing emphasise the permanence of mark making along with laying textures. She often shows prints and garments alongside chosen objects as it maps their relationship along lines of wear, repair and care.
