Josie Mond-James is a weaver and natural dyer, formally trained in woven textiles at the Royal College of Art. After graduating in 2013, she worked predominantly within textile design before stepping away from weaving while raising her family. Returning to the loom several years later felt like finding her way back to a language she already knew, while also reclaiming a creative space for herself. The time at the loom has become both a sanctuary and a place for renewed experimentation.

Now based in Margate on the Kent coast, Josie’s practice is deeply rooted in process and materials. Working with natural fibres and dyes made from plants, seaweed and food waste, she allows the qualities and behaviour of the materials to actively influence the work. Dyeing and weaving are both generative processes, with colour, pattern and structure evolving through a dialogue between careful intention and the unexpected.

Her technically precise woven structures are balanced by a slow, meditative approach to making. Drawing on textile history and familiar domestic forms, her work moves between art, craft and function, exploring the relationships between colour, material, structure and time.
