Margate-based weaver and natural dyer Josie Mond-James creates technically precise woven structures through a slow, meditative practice. Working with natural fibers and dyes derived from plants, seaweed, and food waste, she allows the organic behaviour of her materials to actively guide each composition. Her work moves fluidly between art, craft, and function, drawing on textile history and familiar domestic forms to explore the evolving dialogue between colour, material, pattern, and time.

Josie formally trained in woven textiles at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2013. After working in commercial textile design, she paused her practice to raise her family before returning to the loom years later. Reclaiming the loom as both a personal sanctuary and a space for renewed experimentation, her return marked a re-engagement with a deeply intuitive creative language.

Her tactile works reimagine the subtle role textiles play in everyday life. “I’m interested in the particular place textiles occupy within our lives. They are things we encounter through touch, use and care, and they carry so much history and memory. I like taking those familiar qualities and playing with them through colour, structure and material, allowing something that feels domestic and recognisable to become something more abstract.”
