Lisa Sandner
Lisa Sandner is a self-taught artist and ceramicist based in Münster, Germany. Her pieces are not focused on seeking perfection but on catching the beauty in a trace from the past and imagining a story that could have been. Her work is born by chance. It can be sparked by the beauty of an old tile in a hallway or a faded painting on a wooden chest. Curious of they way they were made and where they came from, she researches and tries to feel their time and universe.
Lisa was brought up in Africa and now travels the world to make new discoveries that inspire her creations. She studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris and London. She is a self-taught ceramicist and follows an intuitive practice. Taking notes or looking at her sketches, she then starts to paint, working solely from the feeling and the images she memorized.
"I feel more like a storyteller transporting images, not like a creator. Every image has already been there before, all I do is recognize its beauty and make something from there.“ - Lisa Sandner

November Drop 2024
"Living close to the Netherlands, I do get to see a lot of Delft tiles which I love. Some of them have been in the same building for more than 100 years, they have seen people come and go. What secrets could they tell us if they spoke? Will the tiles in our hallways today still be there in 100 years? I would like to honor the single tile and let it tell its story. I used the sgraffito technique because drawing images with a fine needle to make another color of clay appear is a beautiful poetic process. It is also a process tied to time: you have to be done before the surface is dry." — Lisa Sandner, T is for Time
The Open Call Winners Collection 2024
“In the series ‘Playing Plates’ I am doing what I love: playfully combining and rearranging images from different times and places that I have collected in my memory. I want my pieces to feel familiar yet at the same make you wonder about the story lying behind." - Lisa Sandner, Playing Plates
