Matt Ritson
Matthew Ritson is a photographer from London. After studying fine art at UAL (2007-2010) he was able to travel the world whilst playing in a band and explore a new relationship with photography and image-making that was more dependent on his location.
He works with both analogue and digital format photography, traveling the world to capture obscure, hazy and untouched landscapes that are then manipulated. These edits and abstractions take place most notably in the darkroom, using techniques that involve touch to trace memories and revisit the places in each image.
"This process really came about during the lockdown when it was almost impossible to travel. I wanted to explore a way in which I could revisit an archive of images, what would it look like to retrace my steps photographically speaking. This led me to start using water on the undeveloped prints as a way to physically trace parts of an image and outline a new way of connecting with them. The process is totally unique and can never be exactly replicated."

July Drop 2023
"This series of images taken around the Mediterranean captures some of the surfaces that you find living close to the sea under the beating sun." - Matt Ritson, Mediterranean
March Drop 2023
"This second part of the photo series showcases a more psychedelic and surreal aspect of the California desert landscapes. These images capture the strange and otherworldly terrain with a surrealistic approach, emphasizing the dream-like quality of the desert. Despite the trippy quality, the collection still manages to convey the vast sense of quietness that can be found there." - Matt Ritson
Drop 5 - Winter 2022
"I was in Seville when the world went into lockdown so all of a sudden the empty city began to speak to me in light, shadow and texture." - Matt Ritson, Seville
Desert Experiments
"This current work looks back at an archive of images taken across the deserts of Southern California in late 2017. Having let these photographs sit for a while, I revisited them, exploring the ways in which they can be reimagined to elicit the strangeness and almost alien qualities of the landscape that I felt whilst roaming through it." - Matt Ritson, Desert Experiments
