Artist

Matthew Richardson

Matthew Richardson works with paint, paper and clay using processes of collage and assemblage. His jewel-like works are meditative and mysterious and emerge slowly through a process of finding visual and metaphorical balance between fragments. The finished works hover between the abstract and imagined, and the magical and every day.

Matthew is based in Norfolk, UK and studied at Cardiff School of Art and Central St Martins. His work has been used by the Poetry Society, The British Library and the V&A and he has shown in both gallery and museum spaces including the New Craftsman, Transition, Outpost and The Beaney.

"I enjoy exploring museums and rummaging in charity shops because I am interested in how objects and materials are affected by wear and tear and the passage of time. I see my process as a sort of ‘visual poetry’ where a piece comes alive through combining and arranging elements in alternative configurations until everything ‘fits’." - Matthew Richardson

Process - An Online Exhibition

“‘Poetics of Space’ is a collection of small works made on cloth bound vintage book covers. The process of their making is like a journey through an inner life, with images evolving by finding and making many and varied connections. These might originate in the title of a book, or marks of wear on a cover, or the atmosphere of a particular colour.” - Matthew Richardson
