Tom Collison
Artist Tom Collison lives and works in Stoke Newington, London. His practice explores materiality through meticulous, process-led making. With a background in print design and a postgraduate degree in textiles from the Royal College of Art, he currently works primarily with paper, using folding as a means to frame space within each sheet. These folds reveal a spectrum of texture and colour, allowing the surface to shift and capture light. Through repetition and disciplined transformation, he investigates the quiet passing of time, creating works that hover between movement and stillness, presence and the trace of process.
The work often seeks to capture or freeze a moment in time. In his paper pieces, this is expressed through the fold - a point of pressure on the material that becomes permanently held in its surface. He is deeply interested in how impressions and tensions leave visible traces, shaping a material’s present form. For him, this feels profoundly human: our thoughts and actions are also shaped by past impressions and tensions.
“My creative practice often shifts, one day I'm interested in textiles, another day wood or paper. It is material-led but by investigation of process on a material. I look at how I can use simplistic interventions in materials and reinvent repetitive crafts in my own unique stylised way” - Tom Collison

"I love the tactility of Tom’s work, he flips what we think we know about materiality on its head - making paper appear sculptural and giving sculptural works a softness." - Georgia Spray
